Prominent Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg accused Israel of committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip, calling for an end to the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.

“Genocide is not self defense, nor is it in any way a proportionate response,” she wrote in an op-ed along with the other members of the Fridays for Future group. “ This amount of suffering is incomprehensible and cannot be allowed to continue. “ She also added that “As fellow humans, we have a responsibility to speak out.”

Thunberg also accused the global north of “looking the other way” and the Swedish military of being complicit in the war crimes by cooperating with Israeli arms companies.

In regards to her support of Palestine, the Israeli government accused Thunberg and her activist group of being ‘radicalized’ and ‘political’.

“We have always been political, because we have always been a movement for justice,” Thunberg wrote, pushing back against the accusations. “Standing in solidarity with Palestinians and all affected civilians has never been in question for us.”

Thunberg also remarked on the sharp increase of Islamophobic and antisemitic hate crimes in Sweden and the world.

“This is unacceptable,” she wrote. “ We unreservedly condemn all forms of discrimination, including antisemitism and Islamophobia.”

The renowned Swedish activist added that “Silence is complicity” and called on everyone to speak out against the atrocities committed by the Israeli forces. Thunberg wrote “You cannot be neutral in an unfolding genocide.”
