Al Jazeera Cameraman Killed and Bureau Chief Injured in Israeli attack

Al Jazeera Arabic Cameraman Samer Abudaqa was killed in an Israeli attack in Khan Younis on Friday. Al Jazeera Arabic Gaza Bureau Chief Wael al-Dahdouh was wounded in the same attack.

Cameraman Abudaqa and Bureau Chief Wael al-Dahdouh were covering the aftermath of Israeli airstrikes at Farhana School in Khan Younis on Friday when they were bombarded by a drone strike. Dahdouh was hit by shrapnel on his upper arm, and managed to reach Nasser hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. But rescue teams were unable to reach Samer Abudaqa in time due to heavy bombardment.

”Rescuers just managed to retrieve the cameraman Samer Abudaqa’s body,” a spokesperson for Al Jazeera said.

The Al Jazeera Media Network condemned Israel for its attack and extended its condolences to Abudaqa’s family.

“The Network holds Israel accountable for systematically targeting and killing Al Jazeera journalists and their families,” a statement read.

In October, Wael al-Dahdouh’s wife, son, daughter and infant grandson were killed by an Israeli airstrike at the Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (C.P.J), a nonprofit organization based in New York that defends the rights of journalists around the world, said it was “deeply saddened” by the rising death toll of journalists and called for an independent investigation of the attack. According to the C.P.J, 64 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7th.
